Docear was initiated in 2010 under the name SciPlore MindMapping by Joeran Beel and Bela Gipp as part of their PhD projects. In 2011, Stefan Langer and Marcel Genzmehr joined the core team and the project received research grants to further develop SciPlore MindMapping, since then being called Docear. This non-commercial open-source project, which has currently 36.000 registered users, is supported by several volunteers from around the world and by the DKE Group and the University of California, Berkeley.
